In this article, D. Clair Davis argues for specific preaching aimed at building up the church. He believes that conversion of those already in the church should not be a primary focus of sermons and “when assurance goes out, despair comes in.” Instead, Davis maintains that preaching needs to be rooted in the finished work of Christ and focused on a continuing discipleship and equipping of the church in God’s Word.
