This article presents ideas from Adams’s 1982 book, Preaching with Purpose. In this article, Adams encourages pastors to find the Holy Spirit’s purpose in a given preaching text. He argues that general purposes in the Bible fall into three basic categories: to inform, to persuade, and to motivate. He then offers a basic way to clearly articulate the main purpose of a text.
