In this article, John Bettler presents an exposition of Isaiah 50:4-11. He maintains that the wise person, the disciple, speaks something he hears from someone else, the Lord. He worships the Lord. What he hears he uses for the benefit of others to address their “ultimate weariness” of living in God’s world without God. Bettler concludes that, if you know the gospel, you can counsel anybody-if you do not know the gospel, you cannot help anybody with their ultimate weariness.
