In this article, Ed Welch offers an open letter that personally addresses heavy drinkers, seeking to win them to biblical understanding and change. Welch argues that alcoholism has traveled only from being sin to being a disease, but the Bible unequivocally states that drunkenness is sin. He concludes with a discussion of the sin-sickness debate about heavy drinking and shows how the biblical definition of sin is much broader, deeper and subtler than most popular understandings of what the word means.
